HOWTO: get a screen shot of a video file hosted online

To take a screen shot of a video file hosted online you can use the -ss option as long as the server supports http streaming you can cature a screenshot without downloading the whole file.

get a simple screen shot of a movie trailer from apple.com trailers

ffmpeg -ss 58 -i 'http://trailers.apple.com/movies/wb/tomb-raider/tomb-raider-trailer-1_h1080p.mov' -vframes 1 -an tomb-raider1.jpg
For JPEG output use -q:v to control output quality. Full range is a linear scale of 1-31 where a lower value results in a higher quality. 2-5 is a good range to try.
